1.1 Composition characteristics

The second-generation duplex stainless steel is generally called standard duplex stainless steel. Its composition is characterized by ultra-low carbon and nitrogen. Its typical composition is 22%Cr+5%Ni+0.17%N. Compared with the first-generation duplex stainless steel, S2205 further increases the nitrogen content and enhances the resistance to stress corrosion and pitting corrosion in acidic media with high chloride ion concentration. Nitrogen is a strong austenite forming element. It is added to the duplex stainless steel, which not only improves the strength of the steel and does not significantly damage the plastic toughness of the steel, but also suppresses the precipitation of carbides and delays the formation of the σ phase.

1.2 Organizational characteristics

Austenitic and ferrite in solid solution of duplex stainless steel account for about half of each at room temperature (duplex stainless steel 2205 ferrite content should be 30%-55%, typical value is about 45%), and has the characteristics of two-phase structure ,see picture 1. It can be observed from the figure that the volume of austenite (white) and ferrite structure (black) are similar, and the two phases are alternately distributed in a strip shape along the rolling direction of the steel pipe.

Duplex stainless steel 2205 retains the characteristics of ferritic stainless steel with high thermal conductivity, small linear expansion coefficient, resistance to pitting corrosion, crevices and chloride stress corrosion; it also has good toughness of austenitic stainless steel, low brittle transition temperature, and intercrystalline resistance The advantages of good corrosion, mechanical properties and welding performance.
